Meet Yemi – Routines and Staying Healthy

This week, we caught up with Yemi to ask about his favourite post-workout breakfast, tips on health and nutrition, and a quick tour of his go-to restaurants in Lagos. Yemi has been a regular customer until his family’s recent move to the United States (we like to think his regular visits home are in part due to our yoghurt).

What was the first Câm product you ordered?

The plain Greek yoghurt, it’s my “go-to” breakfast right now. I order the plain version and then add a drizzle of honey. Before Câm, I was buying a local brand of yoghurt from the grocery store. I think it was made from milk powder rather than real dairy. You can tell the quality difference. Real yoghurt is a lot smoother, tastes better and looks better.

What do you love about having yoghurt for breakfast?

It’s a lighter and healthier alternative to a lot of other breakfast options. I didn’t have a fixed routine before, so every morning would be different. When I switched to yoghurt, it was quicker to make and I could then get on with the day. My wife and kids also now have it. The kids put a little too much honey on it but they love it! If you mix it with some granola and honey it’s so good.

Did your first order measure up to expectations?

I knew about Aisha’s vision for Câm, so I knew it would be good, but I didn’t have any real expectations. When I tasted it, I was like, “Ok, this is really good” and it was also very quick. The yoghurt lasted longer than I expected. I thought after two or three days it would be past its best, but it actually lasted much longer. Also, the service is great. I’ve been speaking to one of the Câmpions called Mohammed. He’s always so helpful and remembers me whenever I order. He knows where I live and he sometimes drops off my order on the same day!

What does your typical routine look like?

We’re in the process of moving to Atlanta in the United States, but we’ll be back and forth to Nigeria. In Lagos, my routine involves dropping my son at school and then going straight to BodyLine Fitness and then to work. I’ll usually have my yoghurt when I get back from doing exercise. Mostly, I have yoghurt with honey and granola. Other times, I’ll mix in pineapple and watermelon.

Can you share any local recommendations with us?

In terms of restaurants, Slow is good. The kale salad is great and so is their chicken. There’s also an excellent sushi restaurant called Izanagi.

If you had to choose between healthy or tasty, which would it be?

I would like to say health, but it’s got to taste good. It’s much easier for me to eat healthy in the morning because I’m in the routine of going to the gym and doing all that stuff so I’m in the right frame of mind. It’s a lot easier for me to be less healthy in the evenings when I’m tired and hungry. If I eat the right stuff after exercise, then I feel like things don’t have to be so perfect later in the day.

What tips do you have for staying healthy?

Having a routine is important. After I drop my son off at school, I know that the next thing I do is go to the gym. Once I’m out of the house, it’s easier to motivate myself. Working out with other people also helps to keep me motivated because I know they’re expecting me to be there. We’re relying on each other and pushing each other. Early on, there was a period when I didn’t know what exercises to do and what foods to eat. Food is probably 70% of the gains, so once I had a routine of eating properly I started to see changes and that gave me motivation to continue. Having a plan helps with making better food choices.

If you wing it, you’re going to always struggle, which is why it’s easy to have a go-to breakfast as part of your routine. In the afternoons, if you don’t have a plan and wait until you’re hungry then you’ll end up going to Chicken Republic or picking up something very random. The key is to plan ahead so you’re never stuck for healthy choices.

Lastly, what would you say to people who haven’t yet tried Câm?

Well, I’d tell them it tastes good! I’d suggest buying the plain yoghurt and mixing it up with granola and honey. The service is also great. I think that’s the key thing about Câm. The orders come through really quickly, it’s always consistent and it’s well-packaged.

Love Câm and would love to be featured?
