Meet Rehia – Entrepreneur, Boxer and Trainer
Rehia runs Elitebox Fitness, a talked-about boxing gym in Lagos that’s attracted global media attention for empowering more Nigerian women to start boxing. He talks to us about his top nutritional tips for people trying to get in shape, plus his favourite oat pancake recipes served with a delicious spoonful of Greek yoghurt.
How did you hear about Câm?
I came across Câm on Instagram and decided to reach out and give it a try. I picked up a couple of the smaller pots of Greek yoghurt via the website store. For me, it’s honestly the best yoghurt I’ve tasted, certainly the best in Nigeria. Before this order, I wasn’t buying yoghurt on a regular basis. If I did, it was mostly from the local grocery store, but nowhere near as frequently as I enjoy it now.
What was your first impression of the taste?
In a word, creamy. You can tell that a lot of care has been put into producing it. The taste is delicious!
As a boxer, were you already aware of the nutritional benefits?
Yes, I knew about the nutritional benefits of Greek yoghurt. For someone like myself, dairy is good to include as part of a balanced diet. As well as looking at portion size, I also focus on the timing of when I eat, so it’s useful to have something on hand straight after I finish a workout. For people at the gym, I’d suggest having a pot of yoghurt as a snack or part of a nutritious breakfast before you train.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and yWhat’s it like being the owner of Elitebox Fitness?
The typical day starts quite early, around 5.30 or 6am. We cater to all levels, from people who are just looking to get healthy and stay in shape through to recreational trainers and competition boxers. So, we have clients in the morning, and then I have a mid-morning break where I typically either train or have a late breakfast. For the rest of the day, I’ll probably spend my time working on admin and things along those lines. In the evening, I try to fit in some sort of activity, it could be cycling or swimming, depending on what’s available on that particular day. But it’s just a combination of gym work, training myself, and also admin work, which is the bane of my existence at the moment!
When planning your week, where do you go for food inspiration?
To be honest, mostly online or via friends who are qualified nutritionists, and sometimes even friends who simply like cooking and trying creative ingredients. In terms of Instagram, there is an account that comes to mind called Mentality. It’s not food-related, but they do post motivational content around mindset and wellbeing.
Can you share one of your own recipes with us?
I’ve been making a lot of oat pancakes at the moment. I typically have them with yoghurt and honey on the side. Because yoghurt already has dairy, I don’t add any milk to the mix. I just mix together oats, peanut butter, one banana, one egg and that’s it. It’s delicious!
When you’re eating out in Lagos, where do you go?
It depends on the cuisine. For example, Indian cuisine is particularly good here. There’s Hotel Cumberland and also Spice Route, both of which are worth a visit. Oh, there’s also a place called Crossroads that serves the best Tex-Mex food in Lagos.
As a trainer, what advice do you give to people looking to get in shape?
The first thing is to reduce alcohol. That’s probably the easiest, closely followed by cutting back on fizzy drinks. If you’re someone who drinks frequently during the week, you could think about pushing it towards the weekends only, so you reduce your intake. In terms of food, just take it easy with the fried stuff and watch for oil content. What you’re eating doesn’t need to be drenched in oil. I think a lot of people find it hard to stick to healthy eating because Nigerian food is so delicious! The first step with anything, whether it’s fizzy drinks or fried foods, is just to reduce it at first and then go from there.
