Meet Ms. Otufale – Detoxing and Food Inspiration
A fan of our Câm Greek yoghurt, Ms Biola Otufale talks about her favourite smoothie recipes and tips for a successful detox. She also shares insider tips on other Nigerian food brands worth following, from the best place to buy homemade apple pie to a new brand of ready-made cocktails that come in pouches.
How did you hear about Câm?
I’m friends with Aisha’s mother [Aisha is the founder of Câm]. She sent me a couple of samples to try. I was totally in love with both of them. I believe one had greater reviews, so that’s the one that I have now. I started ordering the Greek yoghurt without the honey because Câm hadn’t started making the one with the honey at that point.
What made you want to try Greek yoghurt?
Greek yoghurt is supposed to be much healthier than other yoghurts. I go on this diet every so often where I’m not allowed any dairy but I’m allowed Greek yoghurt. I absolutely love it. I have it with fresh fruits and with granola. I’m also going to make it in a smoothie next week.
What ingredients do you add to your smoothies?
It depends on the season. I like mangoes very much so I would usually do mango and ginger. Sometimes I add berries. I have yoghurt almost every day. It’s such a simple, nutritious and easy way to start the morning. I don’t tend to have an early breakfast so I have my yoghurt around noon and sometimes later in the day as a snack.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your lifestyle?
I live in Lagos. I run my own business, a relocation and logistics management company, so I pretty much settle expatriates who come to Nigeria. In terms of my routine, the first thing I do in the morning is drink a bottle of water as soon as I get out of bed. And then I exercise, and then I take a shower. I get to the office around midday, and my lunch arrives at the office. When I’m not on my detox, which I do quite frequently, I’m in the office pretty much all day, and I’m back home in the evening.
What’s involved in your detox routine?
I drink a lot of water – about four litres a day. I also stay away from many different foods. For instance, I don’t eat white rice, bread, meat, potatoes, sugar, not even honey. I do this for about 30 days. I eat loads of fruits and vegetables and combine that with intermittent fasting. By the end, I feel much slimmer, although I do miss eating desserts.
Do you have any other tips for general health and wellbeing?
Yes, I walk quite a lot. In terms of other exercise, I have a trainer who comes and does total body conditioning for me. I also have a yoga instructor and a pilates studio I go to.
So, where do you go for food inspiration?
I watch food shows on TV. I also go to dinner frequently at friends’ houses, so whenever I taste something that I think is interesting I ask how it’s made. And then I tweak it into a brand new recipe.
What are your favourite food brands at the moment?
Quite a lot of them are restaurants and bars, although I also follow quite a few jewellery brands. Some of my favourites are Slow restaurant, Koi restaurant, Talindos steak house and Lagosia. I also follow @thejoyofcrumble for apple crumble, @toastiesbybbb for sandwiches and salads, and Quacktailsng for cocktails that come in little pouches.
What would you say to someone who hasn’t yet tasted real dairy?
I would assure them they have missed out on a great part of their life! Honestly, I would say that yoghurt isn’t for everyone. But if you haven’t tasted Câm, you haven’t tasted real yoghurt.
