A blueprint for our industry

Our scalable model delivers sustainable nutrition to more households, helps marginalised communities participate in the formal economy, breaks our country’s reliance on exports and creates much-needed job opportunities in rural areas.

Ethical Partnerships

We’re creating a blueprint for ethical and sustainable partnerships in Nigeria.

Our partnerships with pastoralists are transparent and structured in a way that provides a steady income and entrepreneurial opportunities. Our aim is to help them benefit from the modern economy without losing their way of life.

Growing Câm involves building trusted long-term relationships across the country and internationally with donor organisations, retailers, investors, government regulators and policy makers, and others who share values and purpose.

We also believe in looking after the people who are helping us reach our goal. We’re proud to have a progressive workplace culture that prioritises equal opportunity, women’s rights, wellbeing and education.

STEP ONE

Pastoralists

The source of all our milk. When we talk about pastoralists, we mean anyone who cares for livestock. In Nigeria, 95% of our 20.7 million cows are owned by the Fulani ethnic group. Many of these households live in extreme poverty on less than $1.90 a day.

We travel to remote regions and build strong relationships with these communities and their leaders – a trusted bond that lasts. We help them generate recurring revenue and build long-term wealth for their households from their greatest asset: their herd. On a larger scale, these partnerships allow us to develop milk collection routes across the country – creating a modern and universally profitable dairy industry all anchored around pastoralists.

STEP TWO

Câm Rangers

The “pipeline” between us and our pastoralist suppliers. Câm Rangers are self-employed contractors and come from rural communities and are tasked with delivering milk from the fields to the factory.

We recruit directly from the communities where we source our milk, creating entrepreneurial opportunities for thousands of young Nigerians living in rural areas. We then provide free training and a low-interest loan to cover start-up costs (such as their vehicle and equipment) that’s deducted from future income in manageable instalments. This model puts Câm Rangers in control of their own future and earning potential – plus it’s a faster and more sustainable way for us to scale.

STEP THREE

Milk Aggregation Centres

These are a crucial part of our infrastructure. Refrigeration is a huge challenge in any milk business. So, whenever we partner with a new community, the next step is to establish a milk aggregation centre nearby. Câm Rangers deliver fresh milk to our milk aggregation centres (MACs) after its been milked first thing in the morning. It’s here that we cool the milk before it’s transported to our factory. One of the perks of being a Câm Ranger is the option to graduate to running their own MAC.

STEP FOUR

Making Our Dairy

The milk arrives at our factory within hours of being milked. Before we do anything else, we run another series of tests using specialist equipment. There’s no guess-work – each batch must meet the highest quality standards for pasteurisation or it’s rejected. Once it’s safe for consumption, we transform our fresh, local milk into a delicious range of dairy products packaged in sustainable glass jars and bottles.

How our milk is made

STEP FIVE

Support & Training

Our commitment extends beyond buying milk and creating income opportunities. We provide Câm Rangers with paraveterinary training, allowing them to earn commission by providing basic veterinary services such as administering vaccines. They can also increase their earnings through taking on additional milk routes, recruiting their own team or taking on their own milk aggregation centre.

In addition to veterinary care, we’re able to support pastoralist communities with everything from setting up bank accounts and providing milk hygiene training through to sourcing medicines and feed for their cows at the best price.

STEP SIX

Customer Deliveries

We deliver fresh dairy every morning via our direct-to-consumer model and through select stockists. We operate our own Câm fleet of refrigerated vehicles and delivery routes, which allows us to control the quality of our dairy from the moment it leaves the udder to when it’s bottled and delivered. For online website orders, customers can either purchase whenever they fancy the occasional treat or purchase a weekly subscription to make sure they never run out.

Our tech & infrastructure

At Câm, we’re always embracing new technologies and rethinking how the dairy industry could operate. In fact, our entire supply chain runs on a mobile app that manages our milk collections and aggregation.

This allows us to record test results, volume of milk and the churn ID for each pastoralist. By using this system, we can monitor quality control, delivery times and trace our milk right back to its source.

We’re taking a technology-first approach to building trust with our partners. For instance, we’ve developed a digital systems to onboard pastoralists and generate a monthly “Câm Print” that shows exactly how much milk they sold and what they were paid.

Lastly, we’re one of the early adopters participating in the International Finance Corporation’s (IFC) award-winning TechEmerge program, which is focused on Sustainable Cooling Temperature-Controlled Logistics in Nigeria – we’re piloting a sustainable rechargeable mobile refrigeration system that provides up to 15 hours of refrigeration without a direct power source, allowing us to deliver our products further afield. Câm was selected as one of the 15 leading Nigerian companies to test climate-smart solutions to refrigeration.
